Overview

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes seizures.

About 1 in 100 people in the United States live with epilepsy. It is more commonly seen in children and older adults than in other age groups.

Epilepsy can be caused by:

  • Genetics
  • Head injuries
  • Strokes
  • Brain tumors
  • Toxic reaction to drugs or alcohol
  • Any condition that damages brain cells

Understanding Epilepsy

At its core, epilepsy simply means a tendency to have seizures.

In the past, seizures were often misunderstood. Some believed they were caused by supernatural forces, leading epilepsy to be called a “sacred disease.” Today, we know that epilepsy is not a disease, but a neurological disorder.

These early misconceptions are the root of many myths and fears that still exist. They can shape how people view epilepsy and make daily life more difficult for those living with it.

Common Types of Seizures

Seizures are generally grouped into two categories; Generalized seizures involve the entire brain while Partial (focal) seizures involve one specific area of the brain.
